D.O. NAVARRA
Located in Southern Pamplona at the base of the Pyrenees in the Ebro basin. Five sub-zones: Valdizarbe, Tierra Estella, Ribera Alta, Baja Montaña and Ribera Baja.
Soil: Brown-limestone soils, with scant amounts of clay and organic material.
Climate: Continental, with significant microclimate variability.
Grapes:
Red: Garnacha Tinta, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Graciano and Mazuelo.
White: Viura predominates, with newer plantings of Chardonnay, Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca.
Wines: Historically the region produced medium-quality roses. Increasingly, harvesting lower yields has led to an emphasis on quality over quantity.
The traditional and favourite grapes are Garnachas and Tempranillo have been added the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay in white, and more recently, Syrah.
The jovenes white wines are produced using chardonnay. Their colour is gold yellow and their aromas are creamy and toasty together with fruit and varietal character.
The rose wines are produce using garnacha most of the times but there is also tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon. Their colour is strawberry-rosy, fresh and fruity; in the mouth are tasty, balanced and good fruitiness.
The red wines from the northern area are produced using tempranillo, they have a highest Atlantic aroma that reminds to red fruits, they are fresher and have highest acid aspects. In the Southern the red wines are produced using garnacha. They are warm wines with mature black fruit notes, circular and smooth in the mouth. The red wines combine native and foreign grapes.
